Overview
The Komatsu City Friendship Garden is a compact Japanese garden within Saltwell Park in Gateshead, created as a gift from the people of Komatsu, Japan. Constructed in 2009, it commemorates the friendship and sister-city relationship between Gateshead and Komatsu. The garden combines a walk-through planted landscape with a symbolic dry pond and waterfall inspired by Rojo Park in Komatsu.
History
Relations between Gateshead and Komatsu began in 1987, following the establishment of the Japanese construction-equipment manufacturer Komatsu in nearby Birtley. A formal town-twinning agreement was signed in August 1991, leading to cultural exchanges and youth programmes between the two municipalities.
In 2001, Gateshead presented a friendship garden to Komatsu to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Japanese city’s foundation. The Saltwell Park garden was subsequently created as Komatsu’s reciprocal gift to Gateshead and as a permanent symbol of the partnership.
The garden was constructed in 2009 by gardeners from the Komatsu Gardening Association, working with Gateshead Council horticultural staff and local support. The work was undertaken in preparation for the twentieth anniversary of the Gateshead–Komatsu partnership in 2011, when the garden became a focus of the commemorations.
Design features
The design takes its principal inspiration from the cherry pond and Yasuragi waterfall in Rojo Park, one of Komatsu’s established public gardens. Instead of reproducing the Japanese site literally, the Gateshead garden condenses its characteristic pond and waterfall scenery into a smaller public-park composition.
Pebbles and gravel represent the surface of the pond and the movement of water descending through the waterfall. Rocks define the symbolic banks and cascades, while Japanese-style stone lanterns and ornamental planting reinforce the garden’s visual identity. The composition therefore combines features associated with a pond-strolling garden and a dry landscape garden.
Paths allow visitors to enter and move around the garden, encountering the dry-water composition from several viewpoints. Its planted areas provide seasonal change, particularly through flowering cherries and autumn foliage, while the mineral landscape remains the garden’s principal symbolic feature.

Current status
The garden remains a maintained and publicly accessible feature of Saltwell Park. Gateshead Council continues to identify the Japanese Garden among the park’s visitor attractions, and the wider park is open throughout the year.
