Overview
Pure Land Japanese Garden is a two-acre Japanese garden and meditation-centre garden in North Clifton, Nottinghamshire. It was created by Buddha Maitreya / Koji Takeuchi, who began transforming a flat field and wilderness into a Japanese garden in 1980. The official site describes the garden as an award-winning Japanese garden intended as a peaceful and beautiful place for visitors to the centre.
History
Maitreya began creating the garden in 1980, shaping a flat two-acre site into a Japanese-inspired landscape. Visitor and local accounts identify him as a Japanese-born meditation teacher and the garden’s creator. The garden developed gradually over decades as both a visitor garden and a meditation environment.
Design features
The garden includes ponds, small hills, bridges, koi, covered seating, a tea-house feature, pagoda-like elements and meditation-oriented garden spaces. It is designed as a peaceful contemplative garden rather than as a historical estate garden.
