Overview
Harrogate Japanese Garden is a restored Japanese-style garden within Valley Gardens, Harrogate. The wider park is a 17-acre Grade II listed public park with themed gardens, historic buildings and mineral springs. The Japanese garden was originally laid out in the 1930s, during a period when Japanese gardens were fashionable in British public parks.
History
The Japanese garden was created in the 1930s as one of several embellishments added to Valley Gardens after the First World War, alongside tennis courts, a children’s boating pool and other garden features. By the early twenty-first century it had fallen into serious decline and was barely recognisable as a Japanese garden. The restoration project started in 2016, led by Ann Beeby and Liz Chidlow, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Graham Hardman is identified by Friends of Valley Gardens as the designer of the restored Japanese Garden.
Design features
The restored garden is organised around a small stream and pond area with Japanese-style planting and garden features. Visitor descriptions mention stone lanterns, a stroll path around the stream, and a compact Japanese-style garden layout. The present garden should be treated as a restored / redesigned Japanese-style public park garden rather than a fully intact 1930s original.

Current status
xtant and restored Japanese-style garden within Valley Gardens, a Grade II listed public park in Harrogate. The original Japanese garden was created in the 1930s but declined during the later twentieth century and was almost unrecognisable by the early twenty-first century, with only a few Japanese maples surviving. A restoration project began in 2016, redesigned the area around an expanded stream and pond, and reintroduced Japanese garden features and planting. The restored garden now survives as a small public Japanese-style garden west of the boating pond within the wider Valley Gardens.
