Compton Acres Japanese Garden

Overview
Compton Acres Japanese Garden is one of the principal themed gardens at Compton Acres in Poole, Dorset. The wider garden was created from 1920 by Thomas William Simpson, who developed a sequence of themed gardens inspired by overseas travel. Compton Acres’ official history states that Simpson purchased the site and created the 10-acre garden with his head gardener, Mr Middleton.
History
Historic England states that the Japanese Garden was constructed by Thomas Simpson after a visit to gardens in Kyoto, using buildings, artefacts, plants and even fish exported from Japan under licence. Secondary garden-history material also describes the Japanese Garden as created by Japanese craftsmen and horticulturists, while later accounts identify Simpson’s head gardener as A. E. Middleton, who supervised work across the gardens.
Design features
The garden includes a central pool, Japanese tea house, thatched summerhouse, stone cascade, imported Japanese stone and bronze artefacts, Japanese maples, Kurume azaleas, wisteria and other Japanese or East Asian planting. Historic England records a Japanese tea house on the east bank of the pool and a stepped stone cascade feeding the water feature. Compton Acres’ own Japanese Garden description emphasises the imported stone and bronze artefacts from Japan that still shape the garden’s atmosphere.

Current status
Extant and restored Japanese garden within the wider 10-acre Compton Acres garden estate. The garden forms one of Compton Acres’ five themed gardens, alongside the Italian Garden, Rock and Water Garden, Heather Garden and Wooded Valley. It remains a ticketed public visitor garden and is presented by Compton Acres as one of the most important historic ornamental gardens in England. The Japanese Garden retains imported stone and bronze artefacts from Japan, many of which still define its character today. Historic England lists Compton Acres at Grade II* and describes the Japanese Garden as a major component of the historic layout created by Thomas Simpson after his visit to Kyoto.
