Overview
The Japanese Garden at Broadview Gardens is a themed educational garden within the grounds of Hadlow College in Kent. Also described in earlier sources as the Oriental Garden, it combines a pond, flowing water, rocks, bridges, winding paths and layered planting within a compact walk-through composition. The garden forms part of Broadview’s collection of more than twenty display gardens used for horticultural and garden-design teaching.
History
Broadview Gardens was developed by Hadlow College as a practical teaching resource for students studying horticulture, garden design, nursery production and landscape architecture. Its approximately eight-acre layout contains a series of contemporary and traditional garden rooms designed, constructed and maintained by college students and staff.
The Japanese garden was created as one of these permanent themed teaching areas. Earlier descriptions usually call it the Oriental Garden, while Hadlow College now presents it as the Japanese Garden. Available published sources do not identify a reliable construction date, individual designer or single student cohort responsible for the original layout. The garden was established by at least 2007, when photographs and contemporary references already documented the Japanese pond garden at Broadview.
Because Broadview functions as a living educational resource, its individual gardens have been periodically altered, replanted and regenerated by successive groups of students. The present composition should therefore be understood as an evolving college garden rather than a wholly preserved work by one designer.
Design features
The garden is organised around a pond and watercourse, accompanied by rocks, planted banks and crossing points. Curving paths allow visitors to move through the composition and encounter the water landscape from changing positions. This sequential route makes Strolling garden the most appropriate controlled classification.
The planting includes trees, shrubs and ground-cover vegetation selected to create enclosure, seasonal variation and a calm woodland atmosphere. Japanese-associated features visible in published photographs include a wooden bridge, stone lantern, rocks, clipped planting and pond-edge vegetation. The composition is interpretive and educational rather than a documented reconstruction of one historic Japanese garden tradition.
The garden also demonstrates practical subjects such as water-feature construction, planting design, pruning and long-term garden maintenance. Its role within the college means that horticultural experimentation and student participation are as important as stylistic authenticity.

Current status
The Japanese Garden remains part of Broadview Gardens, which is currently open to the public without charge. Hadlow College continues to list it among the principal themed gardens, although recent visitor reports indicate that parts of Broadview, including the Japanese area, have experienced periods of reduced maintenance.
