Park Kyoto

Overview
Kyoto Park is a Japanese-style public park in Kyiv, established in 1972 to mark friendly relations between Kyiv and Kyoto. It is located in the Lisovyi residential area of the Desnianskyi District and functions as one of Kyiv’s best-known Japanese-themed urban parks. Kyiv Guide describes it as a symbol of Japanese-Ukrainian friendship created in 1972.
History
The park was founded after Kyiv and Kyoto established sister-city relations. A major modernisation phase began in the 2010s: in 2011, a long sakura alley of 360 trees was planted; in 2017, a reconstructed phase of the park opened with a rock garden designed by Japanese garden designer Shiro Nakane; and in 2018, the park was granted protected park-monument status. Ukrainian sources also note that the sakura alley was recognised as one of the longest in Ukraine.
Design features
The park includes a pond, bridges, artificial waterfall, rock garden, Japanese-style lanterns, torii, pagoda elements, symbolic stones, Japanese maples and a long sakura alley. The garden is best treated as a Japanese-style friendship park rather than a traditional historic Japanese garden.
