Overview
The Amstelpark Japanese Garden is a small Japanese-style garden area in Amstelpark, Amsterdam. The park itself was created for the Floriade 1972 horticultural exhibition and later retained as a public park. The Japanese Garden lies by the large pond and is listed on the Amstelpark map as Japanse Tuin, number 30.
History
Amstelpark was developed as the main site of the 1972 Floriade. The Japanese Garden belongs to this Floriade-derived park landscape. In 2001, during the celebration of 400 years of relations between the Netherlands and Japan, the garden was completely renovated.
Design features
The renovated garden includes low planting such as periwinkle, taller trees, bonsai trees and black bamboo. It is a compact Japanese-style garden beside the park’s large pond, integrated into Amstelpark’s wider horticultural and recreational landscape.
Current status
Extant small Japanese garden within Amstelpark, located by the Grote Vijver / large pond. It remains publicly accessible as part of the municipal park and was fully renovated in 2001.
