Overview
The Monaco Japanese Garden is a 7,000 m² public Japanese garden on Avenue Princesse Grace in the Larvotto district. It was created in 1994 at the request of Prince Rainier III and designed by Japanese landscape architect Yasuo Beppu, winner of the Grand Prix at the Osaka Flower Exhibition. Monaco’s official tourism site presents it as a Japanese garden inspired by traditional Japanese garden art.
History
The garden was commissioned by Prince Rainier III and created in 1994 on Monaco’s seafront, in a dense urban setting near the Grimaldi Forum. Côte d’Azur France states that it was made according to strict Zen design principles by Yasuo Beppu. Several visitor and heritage sources also connect the project with Princess Grace’s wish for a Japanese garden in Monaco, though the more secure commissioning source is Prince Rainier III.
The site is notable because it adapts Japanese garden principles to a Mediterranean climate and a highly artificial urban location. Later descriptions note that imported Japanese materials were used for built features such as the tea house and gate, while European plants were shaped and maintained to evoke Japanese garden forms. The garden therefore combines Japanese design method with local climatic and urban constraints.
Design features
The garden contains a pond, islands, waterfall, stream, beach-like shoreline, stone lanterns, bridges, tea house and a Zen-style meditation garden. Monaco Pratique describes it as a 7,000 m² seafront garden with a Zen garden, tea house and koi pond, while Côte d’Azur France lists the main elements as pond, islands, waterfall, lanterns, bridges, tea house and Zen garden.
