Zen Garden, Oxigen Hotel
Overview
The Zen Garden at Oxigén Hotel is a Japanese-style garden within the grounds of the Oxigén Family Hotel in Noszvaj, northern Hungary. Created as part of the hotel’s Japanese-inspired wellness concept, it combines a classical landscape garden with a separate dry Zen garden and a pine-dominated garden area. The composition is viewed from the hotel’s wellness spaces and provides a quiet transition between the building, the mature wooded estate and the surrounding landscape of the Bükk foothills.
History
The garden was developed during the reconstruction of the former Galassy mansion and the creation of the Oxigén Zen Spa Hotel. The hotel opened to guests in June 2012, and contemporary garden documentation presents the Japanese garden as part of the completed hotel complex.
The project is documented in the portfolio of Hungarian Japanese-garden designer Zoltán Dani, whose website presents the Oxigén Zen Spa Hotel garden alongside his other Japanese garden projects. Dani studied Japanese garden design in Hungary and undertook repeated practical training with the traditional Kyoto gardening company Kōki-ryū Kyoto Niwatsune.
The garden formed part of the original Zen Spa concept, which sought to create an East Asian atmosphere within the renovated country-house hotel. The property later shifted its emphasis towards family tourism and now operates as the Oxigén Family Hotel, but the Zen Garden remains part of the wellness environment.
Design features
The garden consists of several related compositions rather than one uniform historical garden type. Published project material distinguishes a classical Japanese landscape garden, a dry Zen garden and a pine garden. Together they create a layered landscape combining planted scenery with more abstract stone-and-gravel elements.
The landscape section uses rocks, shaped evergreens, low planting and modelled terrain to suggest a natural mountain landscape in miniature. The pine-dominated portion connects the Japanese composition visually with the existing wooded hotel grounds, while carefully arranged vegetation provides enclosure and seasonal variation.
The dry section employs gravel and stone arrangements in a karesansui-inspired composition intended primarily for contemplation. Evening illumination was incorporated into the design, allowing the garden’s rocks, trees and spatial structure to be viewed from the hotel after dark.
The garden is closely connected with the indoor wellness area. Loungers and rest spaces are positioned to provide views towards the ZEN Garden, making it function partly as a viewing garden rather than solely as an outdoor walking landscape.

Current status
