Rosengarten Hamadar
Overview
The Japanese Garden in Hadamar is a small Japanese-inspired landscape within the Rosengarten Hadamar on the Herzenberg plateau. Opened in 2013, it forms one of several themed garden rooms within the larger rose garden. A short approach path leads through restrained planting to a compact composition of rocks, a stream, pond, bamboo and Japanese ornamental trees, intended to symbolise harmony between humanity and nature.
History
The wider Rosengarten Hadamar originated in 1995, when local entrepreneur Mike Groneberg proposed transforming an undeveloped hillside site into a public English-style rose garden. The Verein der Rosenfreunde Hadamar, now Rosengarten Hadamar e.V., was founded in 1996, and the first section of the garden opened in 1998. The site subsequently expanded through a series of themed spaces created largely through voluntary labour.
The Japanese Garden was added during this gradual expansion and was formally opened on 12 May 2013. Available documentation does not identify a separate landscape architect or Japanese garden specialist, suggesting that it was developed as a collaborative project by the garden association and its volunteers.
Design features
The entrance and first approximately five metres are deliberately restrained and are described symbolically as a passage through the visitor’s past, which gradually fades before the main garden landscape is revealed.
The principal composition consists of a small winding stream flowing into a pond, bordered by large and smaller rocks. The water and stone landscape is surrounded by low ground-cover planting, a Japanese flowering cherry, Japanese maples and a bamboo hedge.
A viewing area beyond the pond allows the garden to be perceived as a compact landscape representing harmony between humanity and nature. Bamboo benches provide places for sitting and contemplation. Although visitors approach and enter the garden, the composition is primarily organised around a central pond landscape viewed from a defined resting area rather than an extended circulating route.

Current status
The Japanese Garden remains maintained as one of the themed sections of Rosengarten Hadamar. The wider garden is open throughout the year during daylight hours and can be visited free of charge.
