Overview
The Japanese Garden in Bad Mergentheim is a small public garden within the town’s Kurpark, created in 1996 by a master gardener from Fuefuki, Bad Mergentheim’s Japanese partner city. The official Bad Mergentheim tourism page describes it as a themed garden with small waterfalls, exotic plants and a granite arched bridge.
History
Bad Mergentheim’s Kurpark is a large spa-park landscape of about 134,000 m², containing several themed and horticultural areas, including the rose garden, medicinal and herb garden, rhododendron grove, sound garden, Kneipp facilities and Japanese garden. The Japanese garden belongs to this late twentieth-century thematic layer of the spa park rather than to the older historic spa landscape.
The garden was laid out in 1996 in the eastern part of the Kurpark, between the upper park entrance and the Solymar Therme area. Official tourism material states that it was created by a garden master from the Japanese partner city Fuefuki, bringing a “piece of Japan” into the Kurpark. This makes the garden best understood as both a spa-park feature and a friendship / partner-city garden.
Nodaigarden lists the site as Japanese Garden in Bad Mergentheim / バート・メルゲントハイムの日本庭園, with an area of about 850 m², confirming it as a recognised Japanese-garden record in Germany.
Design features
The garden includes small waterfalls, Japanese / exotic planting and a granite arched bridge. Municipal and tourism sources also refer to an illuminated watercourse. The scale and public spa-park setting suggest a compact modern Japanese-style garden with water and bridge features, rather than a formal dry garden or tea garden.
