Overview
The Japanese Garden at Hotel Brandenburger Hof was a modern courtyard garden inside the former luxury Hotel Brandenburger Hof in Berlin, Germany. The hotel stood near Kurfürstendamm and was known for combining a historic nineteenth-century building with contemporary design. Contemporary travel and hotel sources describe a glass-topped courtyard or winter garden containing a Japanese garden, used as a quiet interior oasis for hotel guests.
History
Hotel Brandenburger Hof opened as a private luxury hotel on 1 October 1991 after architects Peter Sauter and Kenji Tsuchiya transformed a Wilhelminian-era building into a contemporary hotel interior. The Japanese courtyard garden belonged to this post-1991 hotel design phase and formed part of the hotel’s refined interior atmosphere. The hotel was sold in 2013 and taken over by DORMERO in January 2014, initially under the Brandenburger Hof name before being relaunched as DORMERO Hotel Berlin Ku’damm.
Design features
The garden was located in an inner courtyard or winter garden under a glass roof. Sources describe it as a modern Japanese garden visible from the conservatory and breakfast area, creating a calm, enclosed space within the hotel. The documented design context points to a small urban courtyard garden rather than a large landscape garden, with the Japanese character expressed through atmosphere, planting, interior views and the courtyard composition.
Current status
The original Hotel Brandenburger Hof no longer operates under that name. The building is now associated with DORMERO Hotel Berlin Ku’damm, and current hotel listings still mention a garden or courtyard, but the available current sources do not clearly document whether the original Japanese garden survives in its former design. The historical Japanese garden should therefore be recorded as a former or uncertain-survival hotel courtyard garden.
