Overview

The Water Garden of Claude Monet is the Japanese-inspired water garden at Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny, Normandy, France. Monet acquired the land for the water garden in 1893, across the road from the Clos Normand, and transformed it into a pond garden with water lilies, oriental planting and the famous green Japanese bridge. The garden is not a traditional Japanese garden in the strict sense, but a highly personal Japoniste landscape created by Monet as both a living garden and a source for his paintings.

History

Claude Monet moved to Giverny in 1883 and first developed the flower garden known as the Clos Normand. In 1893 he bought an adjacent plot of land crossed by a small brook and obtained permission to divert water into a pond, creating the water garden. The garden became the setting for his water lily and Japanese bridge paintings and was shaped by his long-standing fascination with Japan, also reflected in his large collection of Japanese prints. After Monet’s death in 1926, the property eventually declined, then was restored in the late twentieth century and is now managed by the Fondation Claude Monet.

Design features

The Water Garden includes a pond fed by diverted water, water lilies, weeping willows, bamboo, oriental plants and the green Japanese bridge. Its design uses asymmetry, reflections, curved banks and a painterly composition of water, foliage and light. The garden was not designed as a scholarly reconstruction of a Japanese garden, but as Monet’s own interpretation of Japanese-influenced landscape aesthetics adapted to Giverny.

Current status

The Water Garden remains one of the two main garden areas at the Fondation Claude Monet in Giverny, together with the Clos Normand. It is restored according to Monet’s garden and visual intentions and is open to visitors seasonally as part of the house and gardens. The site is one of the best-known historic artist gardens in France. (2026)
