Barails Ecological Reserve

The former Parc Floral de Bordeaux was created for the Floralies Internationales de Bordeaux in 1992. Within it, a group of twin-city gardens was developed to represent Bordeaux’s international partner cities. Atlas Obscura describes the Barails Twin Cities Gardens as eleven areas built around objects donated by Bordeaux’s sister cities, including gardens representing Germany, Spain, Japan, Morocco and other places; it specifically identifies the Japanese garden as representing Fukuoka.

The garden belongs to the Bordeaux–Fukuoka relationship rather than to a botanical-garden collection or a private Japanese garden project. The Japanese twin-city garden should also be understood within the broader transformation of the site: the former Parc Floral later became part of the Réserve écologique des Barails, a larger biodiversity-oriented green space north of Bordeaux. Current tourism pages therefore describe the area primarily as an ecological reserve, even though the 1992 twin-city garden layer remains part of the site.

Later visitor accounts note that the twin-city garden area survived but suffered from uneven maintenance and gradual decline. Invisible Bordeaux’s 2013 account still described the Fukuoka garden as a peaceful Japanese garden within the Twin Cities Gardens, while Atlas Obscura’s 2025 listing states that the twin-city gardens had gradually fallen into disrepair but remained visitable.
