Viherpaja Japanese Garden
Overview
Viherpaja Japanese Garden is an indoor Japanese-style garden located inside one of the greenhouses of the Viherpaja garden centre in Vantaa. Viherpaja is a commercial garden centre founded by Harri Sokala and Tom Sjölund, and the Japanese garden has become its best-known visitor attraction, because apparently hiding a whole Japanese garden inside a plant shop is what happens when retail briefly develops taste.
History
Viherpaja was founded in 1979 and developed as a specialist garden centre focused especially on houseplants and seasonal plants. Its Japanese garden was built in 1985–1986, with Finnish garden presentation sources stating that the aim was to show how beautiful natural details could be transferred into an artificial indoor environment and arranged into a harmonious whole.
The garden has remained in place since the 1980s and is repeatedly described in Finnish visitor accounts as a long-standing hidden attraction in Vantaa. Because it is located inside a greenhouse / garden-centre environment, it functions differently from an outdoor public park: it is both a display garden, a visitor attraction and a commercial garden-centre feature. Recent official information confirms that the Japanese garden’s access is tied to Viherpaja’s shop opening and seasonal arrangements; the site notes that it will reopen in spring 2026 around cherry blossom time.
Design features
The garden is an indoor Japanese-style display garden with paths, water, a small waterfall, planting and atmospheric sound / music intended to create a calming environment. Finnish garden descriptions emphasise the garden’s enclosed, immersive quality: it is meant to draw the visitor’s attention away from the surrounding world and create a peaceful, harmonious miniature landscape inside the greenhouse.
