TY - JOUR AU - Derek Fell AB - Japanese Zen-garden designer Hiroshi Makita has created a series of Japanese gardens in a property in eastern Pennsylvania. Living in a guest cottage on the 58-acre property and working every day from sunrise to sunset for five years, Makita has created a Japanese cup garden in front of the house, a feng-shui garden on a gentle slope between the farmhouse and two ponds at the bottom of the former garden, and a Zen garden and a feng-shui garden of cascades on a graded slope at the rear of the farmhouse. Designed to look beautiful in all seasons, these gardens are characterized by evergreen trees, natural stone, and simulated or running water—the three main elements of the designer's artistry.
