Adegem Gardens

Overview
Adegem Gardens, or Tuinen van Adegem, is a private three-hectare garden complex in Adegem, near Maldegem. It is associated with the Canada-Poland War Museum site and was designed by Gilbert Van Landschoot. The garden complex contains several themed areas, including a French romantic garden, an English landscape garden, an exotic garden and a Japanese garden. The Japanese section symbolises the path of human life and forms one of the main thematic layers of the site.
History
Adegem Gardens developed around the private museum-and-garden complex created by Gilbert Van Landschoot. The Canada-Poland War Museum commemorates Canadian and Polish soldiers involved in the liberation of Belgium during the Second World War, while the surrounding gardens add a contemplative and symbolic landscape setting to the site.
A 2010 scholarly table of Japanese gardens outside Japan lists the site under Canada War Museum, Adegem-Maldegem, Flanders, Belgium, gives Vanlandschoot as designer and 1994 as the founding year. For the database, however, Adegem Gardens is the better main title, because the Japanese garden is part of the broader Tuinen van Adegem garden complex rather than a standalone museum garden.
Current official visitor information presents the gardens as a three-hectare private show garden with four distinct styles and offers individual audiotour visits as well as guided tours with the designer. The Japanese garden should therefore be described as a thematic garden within Adegem Gardens, not as the whole site.
Design features
Adegem Gardens combines four main garden styles: French romantic, English landscape, exotic and Japanese. The Japanese garden is described as symbolic, representing the path of human life. Visitor descriptions mention rocks, bamboo, mosses, small waterfalls, pagoda-like elements and lanterns. Because the Japanese component sits within a multi-style garden ensemble, the site is best classified as a hybrid / mixed garden rather than as a pure Japanese stroll garden.
