Overview
The Takasakigarten is a small Japanese garden in Kurpark Oberlaa in Vienna. It was originally created in 1974 as the Japanese contribution to the Wiener Internationale Gartenschau 1974 / WIG 74. Vienna’s official visitor information states that the garden was designed according to plans by architect Kinsaku Nakane and later reconstructed in the 1990s after the original exhibition garden had been removed.
History
The garden was first laid out for the 1974 Vienna International Garden Show. After the exhibition it was removed, but the City of Takasaki supported its re-establishment, and it was reconstructed in the 1990s. The present garden therefore represents a reconstruction of the 1974 Japanese exhibition garden rather than an untouched original.
Design features
The garden covers about 600 m² and is centred on a pond with a stone bridge and two stone lanterns. Planting follows Japanese garden conventions and includes Japanese maple, rhododendrons, dogwood and dwarf bamboo.

Current status
Extant reconstructed Japanese garden within Kurpark Oberlaa. It is a small 600 m² public garden with restricted opening days inside the wider municipal park.
The City of Vienna notes that the Takasakigarten is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
